Course Description
This is a modular course covering the basic respiratory therapy procedures encountered in the student's first clinical practice. Topics include basic life support, introduction to the clinical affiliate, medical gas therapy and aerosol therapy. Laboratory experience precedes in-hospital care.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will identify the basic respiratory care components and activities of a department in a medical facility by
- identifying the major designated areas within the medical facility
- locating the policy and procedure manual for the Respiratory Therapy Department
- listing the main sections of a patient's medical chart
- describing the use of correct body mechanics to prevent injury to self and patient
- explaining proper procedures for handwashing, infection control, and safety criteria
- discussing the proper handling techniques for bio hazardous materials
- The student will describe the proper techniques for patient assessment and care by
- listing the steps involved in palpating a pulse to determine rate, rhythm, and force
- evaluating a patient's respiratory rate and correctly classifying any abnormal breathing patterns
- explaining the proper procedure for the assessment of peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR)
- executing the proper procedure for the assessment of SPO2 using a pulse oximetry
- describing the clinical implications of proper patient positioning
- explaining the proper use of a bag valve mask
- instructing the patient in the use of an incentive spirometer
- The student will explain the appropriate use of oxygen by
- listing the proper procedure for transportation of bulk oxygen cylinder
- describing the proper procedure for attachment of a regulator to a bulk oxygen cylinder
- identifying correct procedure to attach supplemental delivery devices on patients
- The students will compare the techniques for delivery of medications commonly used in respiratory care by
- replicating the proper technique of using a needle and syringe
- explaining the process for administering various medications using a MDI with spacer
- listing the steps for delivering various medications using a small volume nebulizer
- demonstrating administration of various medications using a DPI device and PEP device
- The student will demonstrate professional characteristics consistent with job performance expectations by
- adhering to the code of ethics of the American Association of Respiratory Care
- complying with all hospital policies and procedures
- limiting procedures to the scope of practice of a respiratory therapist.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
The student must also complete all psychomotor skills developed from the course objectives with a satisfactory proficiency performance level.
