Requisites
Prerequisite RET 1024 with a minimum grade of C
Course Description
This is a course covering all aspects of normal cardiopulmonary physiology, and the effects of related systems. Topics include respiratory anatomy, mechanics of breathing, arterial blood gases, pulmonary ventilation/perfusion relationships , gas transport mechanisms of blood, neurologic control of ventilation, cardiac and renal function, and respiratory adjustments in health and disease.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will describe the anatomic structure and function of the respiratory system and related musculature by
- discussing the anatomic structures in the cardiac and pulmonary circulatory systems and explaining their function
- explaining the physics and physiology involved in normal respiratory mechanics
- contrasting ventilation-perfusion relationships, the diffusion process, and gas transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide
- discussing the importance of patient positioning and recommending appropriate changes in the patient’s position
- explaining the neural, chemical, proprioception, and vagal means by which respiration is regulated
- The student will identify the anatomic structures of the renal system and explain their function by
- explaining fluid and electrolyte balance and renal buffering
- discussing renal adjustments occurring in health and disease
- The student will describe the procedure for, and clinical significance, of thoracentesis by
- identifying the indications, contraindications, and hazards of thoracentesis
- explaining the standard procedure for thoracentesis
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
