Requisites

Prerequisite BUL 2241 with a minimum grade of C and
(Prerequisite ACG 2001 with a minimum grade of C or
Prerequisite ACG 2021 with a minimum grade of C) and
(Admission to Funeral Services (Associate in Science) (FUNSE-AS) or
Admission to Funeral Arts (Advanced Technical Certificate with Financial Aid Eligibility) (FUNAT-ATC)) and
Pre- or Co-requisite FSE 1150 with a minimum grade of C

Course Description

This course is the study of the role and function of the funeral director as an effective manager. Emphasis is placed on small business management functions of planning, organizing, motivation, direction, and controlling in the funeral home setting.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the basic fundamentals of small business management as applied to funeral home operations by:
    1. discussing the role of small business in the economy.
    2. explaining why management in a small firm is more demanding than a large firm.
    3. describing personal and personnel requirements needed for the success of a self-employed funeral home owner.
    4. describing the elements of sound business management such as:
      1. credit and collections
      2. costs and capital investments
      3. location and expansions of funeral homes
      4. buying or building a funeral home
      5. reducing risks
      6. advertising
  2. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the functions of management for a funeral home by:
    1. defining management and identifying the four functions.
    2. listing the objectives of funeral service.
    3. relating the functions of management to funeral service practice.
    4. defining the areas of management.
    5. explaining the concepts of management related to funeral service.
  3. The student will demonstrate an understanding of federal regulations affecting recruitment and selection of personnel by:
    1. listing considerations for job recruitment.
    2. explaining federal regulations affecting recruitment.
    3. explaining pre-employment interviewing regulations.
  4. The student will demonstrate an understanding of concepts of human relations management by:
    1. explaining motivational factors.
    2. identifying purpose and contents of a personnel manual.
    3. discussing theories of motivation.
    4. stating responsibilities of the manager.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
