Course Description
This course provides experience in the funeral home, under direct supervision of a licensed funeral director/embalmer, applying knowledge of theories and practices of funeral service. The student will perform duties and services as assigned by the preceptor and instructor to include surveillance of, and participation in, execution of total services rendered to the family. Service reports are required to be completed by the student. (Note: This course requires a minimum of 200 hours of supervised funeral home experience).
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the knowledge required to conduct funeral services by:
- observing funeral arrangement conferences conducted by a licensed funeral director.
- completing funeral arrangement forms for the observed funeral arrangement conferences conducted by a licensed funeral director.
- participating in and preparing a minimum of 5 written funeral service reports including:
- visitations
- funeral services
- interments
- memorial services.
- performing duties and assignments as assigned by the licensed funeral director.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles involved in managing a funeral home by:
- explaining the contents of a personnel manual.
- developing a public relations program for a funeral home.
- identifying income, costs, and expenses in operating a funeral home.
- The student will apply the laws and regulations that govern funeral service by:
- identifying the General Price List (GPL), Casket Price List (CPL), and Outer Burial Container List (OBCL).
- explaining Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations for funeral homes.
- completing vital statistics forms.
- identifying federal and state rules and regulations associated with providing funeral services.
- The student will prepare for a position in the deathcare industry by developing a resume..
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the importance of being a member of the local community by participating in a community service event.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 80% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
