Course Description
This course provides the student with learning activities, which will include selected experiences in the funeral home preparation room. (Note: Forty (40) hours of participation in the clinical setting are required to complete this course).
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will prepare laboratory reports in a timely manner using appropriate grammar and terminology by:
- turning in laboratory reports on due date.
- completing 5 appropriate embalming reports.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of proper procedures and safety techniques used in the preparation room by:
- observing all funeral home policies.
- observing all OSHA regulations involving funeral home operations.
- applying universal precautions to all cases.
- displaying appropriate procedures for removal of remains from the place of death.
- displaying professional and ethical behavior.
- maintaining confidentiality.
- The student will apply knowledge of instruments to embalming procedures by:
- utilizing instruments for embalming.
- disinfecting instruments.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the embalming procedure by:
- completing embalming reports.
- observing and participating in embalmings.
- identifying post mortem conditions.
- locating anatomical landmarks to major arteries and veins.
- using appropriate terminology in communication with licensed embalmers and instructors.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the legal aspects of embalming by:
- explaining funeral home authorization procedures.
- applying knowledge of regulations to laboratory experiences.
- identifying all legal requirements in the embalming process.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through laboratory measures developed by individual course instructors.
