Course Description
This course is a cross-cultural, multidisciplinary examination of physical and social aspects of treatment environments and their effects on individual well-being. Professional research, empirical data, and conceptual frameworks will be emphasized.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the logic of measuring social environments by:
- explaining the rationale of measuring social environments.
- summarizing the precedents of measuring social environments.
- discussing the logic of measuring social environments.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the principles that underlie hospital based programs by explaining the similarities and differences between American and European programs.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the principles that underlie community based programs by:
- explaining the similarities and differences in the social milieu between American and European programs.
- explaining the similarities and differences between public and private treatment facilities.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of criteria for beneficial change in the social milieu by:
- identifying necessary changes.
- preparing a plan designed to implement change.
- establishing criteria for evaluating the change.
- The student will apply professional literature to evaluate change milieus by:
- describing sources for data-gathering.
- using appropriate sources in developing change plans.
- classifying similar and different patterns in the literature.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of current evidence – based practices in the field of addiction treatment by:
- researching and identifying current evidence – based practices in addiction treatment.
- discussing the rationale for evidenced – based practices in addiction treatment.
- comparing the similarities and differences in evidence – based practices in addiction treatment.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the models of addiction treatment that best support evidence-based practices in improving the clinical process by:
- researching and identifying the models of addiction treatment in the clinical process.
- discussing the use of the models of addiction treatment in the clinical process.
- summarizing the evidence – based practices in different addiction milieus.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the issues related to adopting innovative practices in community treatment settings by:
- identifying the current issues in the adoption of innovative treatment practices in the community.
- discussing the implications of innovative treatment practices in systems already utilizing standard treatment practices.
- examining new and innovative treatment practices in the American and European programs
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
