Course Description

This is an experiential course which reintroduces basic concepts and skills with regard to different types of groups and group dynamics. The focus is upon presentation of group facilitation techniques and the review of each student’s practice sessions.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will demonstrate an understanding of basic principles of group process and facilitation by:
    1. discussing personal characteristics of effective group leaders.
    2. discussing problems and issues facing beginning group leaders.
    3. identifying skills required by group facilitators.
    4. identifying stages of group process.
  2. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the ethical and professional guidelines for group leaders by:
    1. discussing professional competence, training and personal experience.
    2. discussing ethical issues of group membership.
    3. discussing ethical and legal standards of group facilitation.
  3. The student will demonstrate the ability to effectively use group facilitation skills relative to group purpose and client population by:
    1. learning and applying appropriate use of active listening skills.
    2. constructing an original exercise relative to a specific group purpose and client population.
  4. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the dynamics of interpersonal relationships by:
    1. discussing the importance of building a relationship.
    2. describing the ingredients for building a relationship.
    3. summarizing characteristics of facilitating a relationship.
    4. sharing of personal feelings.
    5. recognizing the importance of and showing the willingness to see self as seen by others.
    6. summarizing positive facilitator traits.
    7. determining own level of :
      1. emotionality
      2. tolerance
      3. trust
      4. self-confidence
    8. becoming familiar with and engaging in ways to relax.
    9. learning and applying the above skills consistently and appropriately.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
