Course Description
This course will provide an overview of crisis intervention theory and practical application to working with individuals in crisis. Students will utilize a case study approach to learn strategies and techniques to assist people experiencing crisis with a focus on appropriate response, assessment, and referrals to local resources.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the history of crisis intervention by outlining the major historical developments of crisis intervention theory.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of two models of crisis intervention by discussing the presented model of crisis intervention including:
- duration of crisis
- four stages of crisis
- three outcomes as a result of the use of the selected model
- cognitive-affective and behavioral changes
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the facilitative process of listening and understanding by practicing the following skills in structured exercises:
- establishing verbal and non-verbal rapport
- practicing facilitative listening
- practicing summarizing, repeating, and synthesizing to help clarify what the client is saying, and help the client to feel that he or she has been heard accurately.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of assessment skills by:
- practicing taking two brief psychosocial histories.
- summarizing internal and external resources.
- explaining suicidal lethality.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of appropriate interventions as determined by severity of crisis by explaining directive, non-directive and cooperative models of problem solving and decision making.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above objectives through classroom measures developed by individual instructors.
