Course Description

This course focuses on prevention and control of infectious diseases with the potential for large public health impact. Topics include the global perspective of infectious disease transmission and the ethics of infection control, prevention, and control of current and potential outbreaks, bioterrorism, and emergency/disaster preparedness.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will review the global issues, trends and epidemiology of communicable disease and the role of the public health system by:
    1. discussing trends in public health and basic concepts of epidemiology.
    2. exploring disease transmission including emerging and re-emerging diseases in various populations.
    3. examining current research on outbreaks of communicable diseases.
  2. The student will examine public health and nursing implications and strategies for communicable disease prevention and control by:
    1. reviewing established standards and guidelines for practice including aspects of public education.
    2. describing the strategies and recommendations of leading organizations in infection control.
  3. The student will analyze ethical issues concerning communicable disease prevention and control by:
    1. reporting ethical dilemmas in infectious disease and infection control.
    2. explaining immunization policies.
    3. identifying topics in security and bioterrorism.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
