Course Description
As a continuation of Class Piano I, this course is designed to prepare students to pass minimum piano proficiency requirements in music-major programs. There is special emphasis upon harmonization of melodies, improvisation, and sight reading. (Note: This course may be taken up to 3 times for a total of 3 credits.)
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will develop an understanding of sight reading skills by:
- identifying rhythmic patterns.
- maintaining an established tempo while performing.
- determining the succession of intervals.
- discerning rhythmic and melodic patterns at least one measure ahead.
- coordinating proper fingerings required for execution of a melodic pattern.
- recognizing inversions of chords, and use proper fingerings for each inversion.
- recognizing notes on upper, middle, and lower ledger lines.
- identifying octave markings.
- recognizing Italian musical terminology.
- observing musical expressive markings.
- identifying shifting meters.
- determining proper metric stress according to meter and phrase context.
- acknowledging appropriate phrasing.
- performing legato and staccato as indicated.
- playing staccato or detached in one hand and legato in the other.
- The student will demonstrate improvisational skills by:
- providing a harmonization of an improvised melody.
- improvising a melodic pattern within the structure of a given chord progression.
- dividing and subdividing the given beat.
- providing various forms of harmonic accompaniment patterns such as alberti bass, waltz bass, arpeggiated bass, or broken blocked-chord bass.
- identifying antecedent and consequent phrase relationships.
- identifying period and double period structure.
- improvising a melody which contains an antecedent and consequent phrase structure.
- The student will develop technical facility necessary for performance of intermediate repertoire by:
- performing triad arpeggios two octaves, hands separately.
- performing dominant and diminished seventh chord arpeggios two octaves, hands separately.
- performing chords with proper fingerings in root, first inversion, and second inversion positions.
- performing chords of major, minor, diminished, and augmented qualities.
- performing double note patterns especially in intervals of thirds and sixths.
- demonstrating the ability to play passages containing five finger patterns in all keys.
- demonstrating ability to perform octaves with proper legato fingering.
- properly executing trill, turns, and mordents.
- observing phrase structure in repertoire.
- observing expressive markings in repertoire.
- memorizing repertoire.
- observing relaxation and flexibility of forearm and wrist movement.
- demonstrating independence of the fingers.
- The student will demonstrate the ability to harmonize melodies requiring primary and secondary triads by:
- performing common tone chord progressions of I-IV-I-V-I in all positions.
- performing common tone chord progressions using I-IV-I-V7-I, I-IV-ii6-V7-I, I-IV-ii, -V7-vi in all positions.
- identifying chord qualities built on each degree on the major scale.
- identifying chord qualities built on each degree of the minor scale.
- performing all positions of any major, minor, diminished, and augmented triad.
- performing all positions of dominant and diminished seventh chords.
- determining harmonic basis for a melody.
- establishing a harmonic rhythm for a given melody.
- determining a suitable accompaniment pattern for a given melody.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
