Course Description

This course is an introduction to the concepts, perspectives, theories, processes and contexts of human communication. An emphasis is placed on acquiring practical communication skills. This course is part of the Associate in Arts Transfer Plan for Communication for the University of South Florida. Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will analyze concepts, perspectives, theories, processes, and contexts of human communication by:
    1. determining the appropriate form of communication according to purpose of the communication through reading, analysis and interactive activities.
    2. distinguishing the appropriate form of communication according to the audience through reading, research, self analysis and interactive activities.
    3. using the appropriate form of communication based on the occasion through research, analysis and self-reflective assignments.
  2. The student will demonstrate an understanding of how to improve practical communication skills by:
    1. transmitting the messages using oral and nonverbal skills suitable to the communication context.
    2. employing appropriate vocal variety in rate, pitch, and intensity appropriate for the communication context.
    3. articulating clearly in Standard American English when communicating in all contexts
    4. using nonverbal behavior which supports the verbal message with eye contact and appropriate posture, gestures and body movements when communicating in all contexts
  3. The student will cultivate skills to increase active learning and encourage personal accountability by developing effective study skills and communication skills by:
    1. understanding communication apprehension through self analysis, interactive activities and research.
    2. developing a sense of self-worth and self-esteem through self analysis, interactive class activities and research.
    3. analyzing the role of values, beliefs, and attitudes in various communication situations contexts through self analysis, interactive activities and research.
  4. The student will demonstrate practical communication skills through descriptive analysis by:
    1. analyzing various forms of communication and communication contexts, such as non verbal communication, listening, interpersonal, small group, and public communication.
    2. demonstrating appropriate use of the various forms of communication.
  5. The student will distinguish communication processes present in any communication event by:
    1. analyzing various forms of communication and contexts through writing, role playing and participating in interactive assignments.
    2. demonstrating the appropriate use of the various forms of communication when writing, role playing and participating in interactive assignments.
  6. The student will describe historical, conceptual, and practical themes in contemporary communication research by:
    1. analyzing and evaluating current research in the communication field.
    2. applying concepts from communication research to various contexts and examples of communication through interactive exercises, personal analysis and research.

Criteria Performance Standard

Criteria performance standard for a grade of "C" or better requires at least a 70% on course activities including quizzes, group participation, essays, and a final presentation.
