Prerequisite appropriate scores on the English and Reading placement tests.

Course Description

This course covers potential health and safety hazards one will encounter at a crime scene. The course will also introduce the proper protective techniques to minimize risk to self and others. Emergency procedures and state and federal regulations are included.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will identify potential health and safety hazards at a crime scene, including:
    1. biological hazards
    2. chemical hazards
    3. radiological, weapons and explosives hazards
    4. clandestine drug laboratories
    5. potentially violent situations
  2. The student will apply skills and techniques to minimize risk to self and others by:
    1. using safety equipment properly
    2. handling firearms evidence/explosives safely
    3. collecting and marking hazardous evidence properly
    4. disposing of hazardous materials properly
  3. The student will explain state and federal regulations regarding hazardous materials related to crime scenes by:
    1. locating and interpreting Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
    2. identifying Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.
  4. The student will apply appropriate emergency procedures and documentation at a crime scene according to the type of hazard presented.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 70 percent accuracy, demonstrate achievement of the above objectives through: 1. Multiple-choice objective and short answer essay tests. 2. Mock crime scene exercises.
