Course Description

This course offers practical experience in a variety of forms of public speaking with an emphasis on argumentation and persuasion to improve the student’s ability to transmit a well-researched, cogent, thoughtful message adapted to a particular audience. Emphasis is also placed on the study of effective aural communication. Students will engage in critical thinking and rhetorical criticism exercises. This course partially satisfies the writing requirements outlined in the General Education Requirements. (Note: Credit is only given for SPC 1608 or SPC 1608H.)

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will demonstrate improved ability in the preparation and organization of various types of public speeches, the majority of which emphasize argumentation and persuasion by:
    1. selecting and narrowing a topic suitable to purpose, audience, and occasion.
    2. determining the general and specific purpose of the oral discourse.
    3. setting a modest, realistic specific goal.
    4. formulating a concise thesis statement.
    5. using an effective organizational pattern.
    6. providing a variety of effective supporting materials and/or evidence.
    7. constructing valid arguments using a variety of types of proof.
    8. evaluating and using a variety of sources to support ideas.
    9. personalizing the topic for the audience.
    10. using inclusive language, information, and invitational techniques.
    11. employing American English appropriate to the topic, audience, purpose and occasion.
    12. using effective transitions.
  2. The student will demonstrate improved ability in using the principles of audience analysis, adaptation, and inclusion to customize the message for the intended audience and occasion by:
    1. conducting a careful audience analysis during the planning stages to determine audience’s demographics, knowledge, interest, and background related to the topic.
    2. analyzing the situation and occasion during the planning stages.
    3. studying other speakers’ techniques of customizing messages.
    4. applying the results of the audience, situation, and occasion analyses during classroom presentations.
    5. writing critiques of other students' speeches which address the question of audience suitability.
    6. writing a rhetorical criticism of a published speech(es) or of an outside speaker which addresses the question of audience suitability.
  3. The student will demonstrate increasing competence in the delivery of public speeches by:
    1. transmitting the messages using oral and nonverbal delivery skills suitable to the topic, audience, purpose and occasion.
    2. using appropriate opening strategies to effectively engage the audience.
    3. using appropriate closing strategies to keep the audience interested through the ending.
    4. employing vocal expressiveness in rate, pitch, volume, and intensity.
    5. articulating, enunciating, and pronouncing words correctly and clearly.
    6. avoiding meaningless vocal fillers.
    7. using nonverbal behavior which supports the verbal message with eye contact and appropriate appearance, posture, gestures, facial expressions and body movements.
    8. using appropriate presentation aids (i.e. Power Point, Document Handler) that effectively enhance the oral message.
  4. The student will demonstrate understanding of rhetorical criticism techniques by:
    1. writing critiques of other students' speeches explaining what was effective and what needed improvement.
    2. participating in oral critiques and class discussion about other students' speeches.
    3. utilizing a prescribed methodology, writing a rhetorical criticism of a published speech(es) or of an outside live speaker which describes, analyzes and evaluates the speaker and message according to the precepts of effective public speaking.
    4. employing the knowledge gained from the critiques in subsequent speeches.
  5. The student will demonstrate increasing competence in aural communication competencies in a variety of communication settings as established by the National Communication Association by:
    1. using verbal and nonverbal behaviors that demonstrate willingness to listen to messages when variables such as setting, speaker, or topic may not be conducive to listening.
    2. identifying the speaker's purpose and organization of ideas.
    3. recognizing relationships among ideas.
    4. recalling basic ideas and details.
    5. perceiving speaker's purpose and organization of ideas and information.
    6. discriminating between statements of fact and opinion.
    7. distinguishing between emotional and logical arguments.
    8. developing an awareness of bias and prejudice, including stereotyping according to ethnic heritage.
    9. recognizing the speaker's attitude.
    10. synthesizing and evaluating by drawing logical inferences and conclusions.
    11. recalling the implications and arguments.
    12. recognizing subtleties between the nonverbal and verbal messages.
    13. employing active listening strategies when appropriate.
    14. identifying the thesis of a spoken formal message.
    15. identifying the preview of a spoken formal message.
    16. monitoring one’s listening skills.
    17. writing a self-evaluation of one’s listening skills including a plan of action to improve.
  6. The student will demonstrate increasing competence in using critical thinking skills by:
    1. examining oneself as a communicator while selecting, refining, researching, organizing, and presenting ideas orally and in writing.
    2. evaluating ideas presented by others in class.
    3. completing extemporaneous and impromptu oral tasks that require thinking, analysis, refutation, support, and defense of ideas while considering and answering opposing views, such as debates.
    4. selecting a current public opinion issue, taking a position, and supporting it with extensive research, including primary sources.
    5. developing several different introductions for the same speech.
  7. The student will demonstrate increased ability in outlining and writing by:
    1. planning and writing various prescribed outlines for speeches.
    2. writing critiques, essays, and reactions about public speakers' performances.
    3. writing essays about communication and public speaking topics.
  8. The student will demonstrate understanding and increased competence in library research, information gathering and retrieval skills, and referencing sources in oral presentations, which includes Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education as set forth by the Association of College and Research Libraries by:
    1. utilizing library resources including books, periodicals, reference materials, and electronic data retrieval sources.
    2. designing and administering surveys and conducting interviews.
    3. using an appropriate number of sources for each speech according to the audience, purpose, time limit, occasion, and type of speech.
    4. using appropriate bibliographic referencing styles for written discourse.
    5. acknowledging sources effectively during the speech.

Criteria Performance Standard

Criteria for Evaluation of Writing: The student will exhibit on his/her writing the characteristics of at least Level 4 (Practice Writing) in the College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) Descriptions of Essay Ratings. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will, with minimum 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by the individual course instructors.
