Course Description
This course is an introduction to the Florida Building Code and local zoning codes which are laws governing the construction of buildings. Other documents are discussed including: National Electric Code, Life Safety Code, the Standard Building Code, testing agencies, accessibility and governmental agencies which impact on the construction industry.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the code requirements of the Florida Building Code by:
- interpreting at least 90 percent of code requirements for structural integrity of a building.
- using the Florida Building Code for residential home construction with 90 percent accuracy.
- interpreting the Florida Building Code for at least 90 percent of given situations.
- interpreting residential and commercial working drawings with 90 percent accuracy.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the impact of codes, testing societies and governmental agencies on the construction industry by:
- discussing the requirements in construction of a quality building with sound structural integrity with 70 percent accuracy.
- summarizing salient features of given fire and electrical codes with 90 percent accuracy.
- summarizing the role played in construction by testing societies and governmental agencies with 70 percent accuracy.
- describing historic and recent trends in zoning ordinances.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
