Course Description
This course will provide the student with an overview of society’s need for planning for disastrous situations. This course reviews fire prevention background and concepts; non-governmental fire prevention functions; government fire prevention efforts; preparation of fire prevention personnel; fire prevention through building and fire safety codes; effective fire prevention inspection; human reaction to fire emergencies; public fire education; research in fire prevention; international fire prevention practices; evaluation of fire safety efforts; cause determination; and arson suppression.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will describe aspects of risk reduction education and overall community risk reduction by:
- Discussing Fire Prevention week.
- Identifying community fire problems and identifying solutions.
- The student will analyze the fire investigation process by:
- Identifying local, state and federal cases and laws that affect fire investigations.
- Describing fire investigations process and procedure.
- The student will describe economic and governmental influences on fire prevention by:
- Explaining the fundamental aspects of codes and standards, and the inspection and plan review process.
- Identifying behaviors and practices that may extend liability or increase the likelihood of litigation.
- Evaluating policies and procedures for potential legal impact.
- The student will formulate strategies for fire prevention by:
- Discussing historical and social influences and describing the master planning process.
- Explaining the effects of departmental influences on fire prevention programs and activities.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through objective classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
