Course Description

This course is an overview of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and its relationship to the construction industry. Topics include history, general OSHA standards, job safety, health hazards, fire protection and prevention, material storage, handling, use and disposal, and hand and power tools.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will develop an awareness of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) by:.
    1. discussing the history of OSHA.
    2. listing the provisions of the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
  2. The student will develop an awareness of the impact of OSHA on the construction industry by:
    1. discussing the OSHA standards that have an effect on the construction industry.
    2. discussing the financial impact of OSHA standards on the construction industry.
    3. discussing how OSHA standards have affected insurance and liability in the construction industry.
  3. The student will develop an awareness of OSHA standards concerning job safety, health hazards, fire protection and prevention, material storage, handling, use and disposal, and hand and power tools by:
    1. discussing job safety requirements for excavation work, scaffolding and ladders, floor and wall openings, electrical hazards, cranes and hoists, window-washing equipment and motor vehicle or other mechanical equipment.
    2. discussing fire prevention and protection requirements.
    3. discussing job safety requirements for the storage, handling, use and disposal of materials and equipment.
    4. discussing miscellaneous job safety requirements including personal protection, tool use and maintenance and the working environment.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of this course the student will, with a minimum of 80% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
