Course Description
This course is a survey of roofing systems used in construction. Topics include materials, products, accessories, underlayments, substrates, flashing, code applications and construction methods for membrane, composition shingle, tile, metal and wood roofing systems.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will evaluate the materials, products and accessories of roofing systems by:
- identifying membrane, composition shingle, tile, metal and wood roofing systems.
- discussing the properties of membrane, composition shingle, tile, metal and wood roofing systems, including ability to resist traffic, fire resistance, fungus and mildew resistance, life span, cost, guarantees and warranties.
- selecting an appropriate roofing system for a given residential application.
- The student will explain the principles of flashing by:
- identifying critical areas.
- choosing the proper material and method of installation.
- The student will analyze the code applications with respect to roofing systems by:
- listing the minimum and maximum slopes allowed by the building code for membrane, composition shingle, tile, metal and wood roofing systems.
- choosing the proper underlayment for a given roof slope for membrane, composition shingle, tile, metal and wood roofing systems.
- discussing the importance of proper fastening techniques to resist wind pressures for membrane, composition shingle, tile, metal and wood roofing systems.
- describing the proper installation procedures for membrane, composition shingle, tile, metal and wood roofing systems for given slope and substrate conditions.
- The student will discuss the new trends in roofing materials that promote environmentally conscious "Green Buildings" by:
- listing new roofing products that are environmentally friendly.
- describing the benefits of using roofing materials made from recycled materials.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 80% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
