Course Description
This course is an overview of the design and construction of hurricane-resistant structures for contractors and builders. Topics covered will include the impact of recent hurricanes on the construction industry, basic engineering principles (wind loads, shear walls, diaphragms, uplift, overturning, etc.), structural failure, waterproof construction (roofing, storm surge, doors and windows, etc.) and insurance topics. Emphasis will be on new code requirements and construction techniques for residential construction.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will explain the impact of hurricanes on the construction industry by:
- discussing the financial impact of recent disasters caused by hurricanes.
- discussing the financial impact of new code requirements for hurricane resistant design on new construction.
- discussing the "public image" of the contractor after the recent disasters caused by hurricanes.
- The student will evaluate hurricane resistant design and construction techniques by:
- identifying structural elements that are used to resist wind loads with 90% accuracy.
- identifying structural elements that are used to resist uplift loads with 90% accuracy.
- identifying causes of specific building failures.
- The student will analyze the new and changing building code requirements for hurricane resistant design by:
- reviewing the latest building code requirements.
- comparing specific code situations for design purposes.
- identifying the latest code requirements with 90% accuracy.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 80% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
