Course Description

This course is an introduction to the professional written requirements of contracts, plans and specifications which are legal documents governing the construction of buildings. Discussions will include the Uniform Construction Index, data filing systems, data organization and format, Sweet's Catalog Files and Standardized Software.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will demonstrate an understanding of contracts and agreements for construction services by:
    1. completing AIA Document A107, Standard Form of Agreement between owner and contractor.
    2. discussing the requirements of AIA Document A201, General Conditions of the Contract for Construction.
    3. completing a bid proposal for a specific subcontracting service.
  2. The student will categorize building materials into the divisions of the Uniform Construction Index by:
    1. listing the sixteen divisions of the Uniform Construction with 100% accuracy.
    2. identifying the proper division number associated with the product, given manufacturers' catalogs, with 70% accuracy.
    3. locating literature in the Sweet's Catalog files, given products, trade names or manufacturer’s name, with 100% accuracy.
  3. The student will apply learned skills in writing building specifications from a set of construction working drawings by:
    1. using the Uniform System Index to write specifications from working drawings with 70 percent accuracy.
    2. using the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) Standards to write preliminary and final specifications with 100 percent accuracy.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
