Course Description
This is the capstone course for the Paralegal Studies program. It will provide the opportunity for the student to demonstrate that he/she has learned both the theoretical material and practical skills from the program and can apply them in the real world. It must be taken during the student’s last semester at the college. This course focuses on giving the student the opportunity to develop and present a plan to solve a problem dealing with paralegal issues today. The student will choose a topic for a project consistent with the goals of this course and submit it to the course instructor for approval.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will be proficient with legal terminology by:
- explaining the various legal concepts and terms in his/her project of selected area of specialty.
- The student will demonstrate competent writing and oral communications skills by:
- identifying, developing, and presenting a written project of a current topic, approved by the dean, in a specialized area of the law of his/her choice.
- The student will have a thorough knowledge of state and federal court systems by:
- analyzing and presenting how his/her project topic is affected by each court system.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge, understanding, and competencies in a selected specialized area of the law by:
- identifying his/her approach to the specific problem, including research, gathering evidence, and application.
- participating in community service oriented activities.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
