Course Description
Private instruction. This course is a continuation of MVK 1211 and is for the music major in the second year of study in the secondary performance area. The private lesson focuses on a beginning to intermediate approach to the development of technique and music literature. (Note: This course may be taken up to 3 times for a total of 6 credits. One half-hour lesson or one hour lesson per week.)
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will formulate concepts of musicianship by:
- practicing and studying music literature and studies appropriate to the performing area.
- demonstrating mastery of the musical elements of pitch, rhythm, tempo, dynamics, and phrasing.
- The student will synthesize idiomatic techniques by:
- addressing the musical and physical elements of piano technique such as finger dexterity, tone quality, flexibility and muscle coordination in exercises and music literature studied each week in the lesson.
- demonstrating mastery of the musical and physical elements of piano technique such as finger dexterity, and muscle coordination in the performance of music literature.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of stage presence by:
- practicing alignment of posture in the lesson and acheiving mastery of this element in the recital.
- describing poise and deportment as it pertains to the delivery of repertoire in the recital.
- analyzing the performance relationship of a soloist and accompanist.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of presentation by:
- reflecting and developing interpretation of appropriate music literature.
- studying and observing style of presentation in the required student recitals and other performances.
- developing an individual use of expression as it pertains to the literature prepared for the applied lesson and achieving mastery of this element in the student recital.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of repertoire by:
- learning, memorizing, and performing music literature appropriate to the course level.
- emulating performances of idiomatic music literature by other students in recitals and other performances.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through a jury exam given by the music faculty.
