Course Description
This course is designed as a continuation of Aural Theory I, with emphasis on harmonic progressions, applied chords, and melodic phrases. The student will also learn to perform and aurally identify common melodic embellishments and perform figured bass notation.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of harmonic progressions that are the foundation of tonal music by:
- performing progressions involving the dominant-tonic relationship.
- singing short melodies based on dominant and tonic outlines.
- performing phrases based on Roman-numeral progressions.
- identifying harmonization used in excerpts from diatonic music literature.
- determining cadence types used in excerpts from diatonic music literature.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of common melodic embellishments by:
- defining nonchord tones.
- applying nonchord tones to melodic outlines.
- identifying nonchord tones heard in diatonic music.
- singing diatonic melodies with nonchord tones.
- The student will develop comprehension of figured-bass notation by:
- listing figured bass symbols.
- performing chords from given figured bass symbols.
- writing Roman numerals and figures beneath bass pitches.
- recognizing figured-bass realizations by listening.
- performing phrases from Roman numeral progressions.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of applied chords by:
- defining secondary-dominant-function chords.
- identifying secondary dominant chords and secondary leading-tone chords.
- performing model progressions which incorporate secondary dominants.
- distinguishing secondary dominant chords from secondary leading-tone chords.
- recognizing secondary-dominant-function chords by listening.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
