Course Description
This course is designed as a continuation of Music Theory I, with emphasis on harmonization, voice-leading, and figured bass. Compositional techniques for expanding melodic and harmonic frameworks are investigated through the exploration of phrases, cadences, and applied chords.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of functional harmonic progressions using all diatonic and seventh chords by:
- defining the figured bass symbols for all diatonic and seventh chords.
- realizing figured bass in passages using all diatonic and seventh chords.
- analyzing homophonic textures with melodic independence in more than one voice.
- composing homophonic textures.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of four-voice texture emphasizing correct doubling and voice leading by:
- discussing the rules of strict voice leading.
- solving short voice leading exercises.
- composing short four-voice passages according to common practice guidelines.
- analyzing four-voice passages from the common practice period.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of homophonic texture with melodic independence in more than one voice by:
- analyzing homophonic compositions.
- composing short homophonic passages.
- discussing the relationship between voice-leading and harmonic progression.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the phrase model by:
- demonstrating tonic and dominant voice-leading.
- identifying embellishing tones.
- recognizing leading-tone, predominant, and 6/4 chords.
- detecting diatonic sequences.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of applied chords by:
- discussing intensified motion toward the dominant.
- writing secondary dominants and secondary leading-tone chords.
- illustrating embellishment of the basic phrase with new voice-leading chords.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
