Course Description

This course covers practical applications in the major practices of modern supervision, including leadership, communication, motivation, performance appraisal, staffing, training and employee development, factors involved in safety, and time management.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will understand major supervision styles and be able to determine which style is appropriate in given business situations by:
    1. influencing productivity of subordinates by selecting appropriate interventions for given situations.
    2. identifying the complexities of leading and being perceived as a leader.
    3. explaining the reason a supervisor's personal loyalty is important to employees without compromising company goal.
    4. applying the concept of team building to work group.
    5. explaining how job enrichment will enhance motivation.
    6. identifying how individual differences influence motivation techniques.
    7. identifying the factors affecting morale.
    8. identifying the consequences of dissatisfaction on the job and how they affect the company.
    9. explaining what motivation is and describe how internal drive is related to an external goal.
    10. explaining the advantages and disadvantages of autocratic, participative and free-reign leadership styles.
    11. explaining the relationship between leadership and popularity.
  2. The student will develop knowledge of the procedures for hiring, training, and appraising employees by:
    1. identifying the purpose of a job description.
    2. identifying the basic methods of recruiting.
    3. identifying the need for establishing training goals before the methods of training are established.
    4. identifying the various approaches to employee training.
    5. explaining how an on-the-job training program might work.
    6. explaining the function of employee appraisals and the associated consequences.
    7. conducting an appraisal interview.
    8. demonstrating professional behavior in handling warnings or dismissals.
  3. The student will develop knowledge of the supervisor's role in dealing with informal groups, conflict, discipline, problem employees, communications, and delegation by:
    1. explaining feedback and why it is beneficial.
    2. explaining why listening may be as important to success as speaking well.
    3. explaining how to provide for individual differences in perception during communication.
    4. explaining how upward, downward, and horizontal communications differ.
    5. explaining the need for an informal grapevine and learning how to end rumors.
    6. defining the concept of positive discipline.
    7. identifying symptoms of emotional problems and substance abuse problems affecting employees and knowing when to recommend an employee assistance program (EAP) or outside professional assistance.
  4. The student will develop knowledge of the supervisor's role in relation to outside influences of labor unions, OSHA requirements, and government directed employment practices by:
    1. explaining steps involved in a grievance procedure.
    2. explaining how the supervisor's role is affected by a union contract.
    3. learning to employ a "problem solving" approach to employment conflicts.
    4. identifying laws governing discrimination.
    5. explaining the various aspects of an affirmative action program.
    6. explaining the importance of safety in the workplace.
    7. identifying time management techniques.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 60% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
