Course Description

This course presents a systematic approach to managing housekeeping operations in the hospitality industry. Emphasis is placed on the role of the housekeeping department and understanding the managerial skills necessary to efficiently operate this department.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will understand the general areas of housekeeping operations by:
    1. listing the areas of housekeeping maintenance.
    2. describing the difference among public, private and guest areas.
    3. describing laundry room operations and control techniques.
  2. The student will understand the different types of surface cleaning and the equipment and supplies necessary for this by:
    1. listing the categories of surfaces.
    2. describing the general chemicals used in surface cleaning
    3. explaining the various types of tools and equipment used in cleaning.
    4. explaining the procedure for wall covering upkeep.
    5. demonstrating safe, sanitary and efficient cleaning procedures for various housekeeping tasks.
  3. The student will understand the procedures and control systems in housekeeping by:
    1. diagramming and explaining the functional relationships with front desk, maintenance and security.
    2. describing how to complete a time and motion study.
    3. listing the check points for cleaning in guest areas.
    4. defining reorder points for supplies.
    5. describing the use of computers in housekeeping operations.
    6. explaining minimum stock for laundry items.
  4. The student will understand housekeeping safety by:
    1. listing and explaining the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) rules that apply to housekeeping.
    2. explaining the proper use and storage of cleaning chemicals.
    3. explaining procedures for hotel emergencies.
    4. describing how key security is managed in various key systems.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will, with minimum 80% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by the individual course instructors.
