Course Description

This course is an introduction to the many facets of the hotel-motel and food service industries. The course includes a study of the history, scope and innovations in the industry. The course includes guest lectures from the industry and visits to local hospitality establishments. Students will see the advantages of the hospitality and tourism industry as a career path.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will describe the many parts of the hospitality and tourism industry by:
    1. explaining the function of hotels, motels, clubs, food service, travel agencies, airlines, and attractions.
    2. explaining how the various components are inter-related for the traveler.
    3. identifying the different customer profiles that utilize the various components.
    4. listing the businesses that comprise the hospitality and tourism industry.
  2. The student will learn the history and future trends of the hospitality and tourism industry by:
    1. defining the historical traveler and the travel profiles of today and the future.
    2. describing how the needs of the traveler have changed over history and how the hospitality and tourism industry has adapted to the changes.
    3. identifying the types of travelers today and those anticipated in the future.
    4. describing the major historical influences that affect the development of world-wide travel and tourism.
    5. identifying the two broad categories into which the travel industry is divided.
  3. The student will learn the categories of hotels, motels, resorts and food service operations by:
    1. identifying chains, co-owner chains, franchises, management-contract operations, and referral organizations.
    2. identifying the three principal categories of hotel patrons.
    3. listing the main operational parts of hotels, motels, and resorts.
    4. identifying the types of transactions in hotels, motels, and resorts.
  4. The student will learn job opportunities and career paths in the hospitality and tourism industry by:
    1. listing the job categories in the industry.
    2. explaining career paths in the hospitality industry.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 80% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
