Course Description
This course is designed to give the student an understanding of the principles of the operations of a funeral home. Topics of study will include merchandising, casket and vault construction, pre-need and at-need funeral arrangements, funeral services forms, death benefits, and vital statistics. Lecture and laboratory experience in funeral arrangements.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of merchandising in the funeral home by: determining merchandise availability.
- distinguishing between costs and expenses.
- explaining methods of determining a selling price for merchandise.
- explaining financial aspects of cost of operations.
- explaining arrangement consideration in the selection room.
- differentiating between selling price and price quotation.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the materials and construction of a casket by:
- categorizing casket.
- identifying component parts of a casket.
- explaining casket interiors and exteriors.
- explaining the reasons for differences in prices of caskets.
- describing closure methods, casket styles, and casket sizes.
- explaining children's and infant caskets.
- correctly identifying inside dimensions of caskets.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the materials and construction of outside containers by:
- identifying types of grave liners.
- identifying materials used in construction.
- listing methods of closure.
- discussing methods of selling vaults and outside containers.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the skills used in making pre-need and at-need funeral arrangements by:
- describing making pre-need funeral arrangements.
- explaining financial consideration for pre-need funeral arrangements.
- describing making at-need funeral arrangements.
- completing all necessary forms for funeral arrangements.
- describing selection room procedures both direct and indirect selling.
- explaining Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Funeral Rule requirements.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the death benefits available to next of kin by:
- explaining benefits and completing forms for
- veterans;
- social security;
- railroad retirees; and
- life and burial insurance.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the funeral director's role in vital statistics by:
- explaining the purpose of the death certificate.
- collecting the following forms:
- death certificate
- burial transit permit
- distinterment
- cremation permit
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
