Course Description
This course is a survey of finance. Emphasis is placed on current problems of finance and the development of basic principles. The major topics of study include the concept of money, monetary and credit systems, money and capital markets, time value of money, and characteristics of stocks and bonds.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will define the concept of money by:
- explaining “money.”
- describing the various functions of money.
- discussing the effects of price changes on money.
- identifying the primary currencies used in the global economy.
- The student will describe monetary and credit systems by:
- identifying the various financial institutions.
- explaining the the role of Federal Reserve Bank.
- discussing the tools of the Federal Reserve Bank.
- identifying the various government regulatory institutions.
- The student will explain money and capital markets by:
- defining primary and secondary markets.
- describing the various types of securities used in money and capital markets.
- discussing the types of financial intermediaries that operate in money and capital markets.
- differentiating between efficient and inefficient markets.
- The student will define and apply the time value of money by:
- explaining the time value of money.
- identifying the types of time value of money applications.
- calculating the future and present value of single amounts and annuities.
- describing and calculating the effective interest rate.
- The student will discuss the characteristics of stocks and bonds by:
- defining the various types of stocks and bonds.
- describing the participants in the stock and bond markets.
- Identifying the various stock and bond exchanges.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 60% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
