Admission to Public Safety Administration (Bachelor of Applied Science) (PSA-BAS)

Course Description

This is an executive level course introducing the student to the concepts and processes of fire service administration. The course will prepare the student for upper level fire service management. The course will focus on modern fire protection, resource management, fire prevention, and support services including intergovernmental coordination.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the context of modern fire and rescues services by:
    1. describing modern approaches to fire protection, emergency medical services, and rescue services.
    2. researching the processes for evaluating local risks.
    3. discussing the development of a plan for the necessary resources.
    4. describing leadership strategies for the political process.
  2. The student will demonstrate an understanding of resource management by:
    1. discussing the organization and deployment of resources.
    2. researching human resource management.
    3. identifying and discussing fiscal management.
    4. researching and describing capital resource management.
  3. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the processes to improve resources by:
    1. discussing the basic functions and styles of leadership and management.
    2. describing the processes and practices for training programs.
    3. identifying performance measurement and organizational improvement.
    4. discussing the processes and need for health and wellness programs.
  4. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the components of fire prevention programs by:
    1. discussing the components necessary for a comprehensive fire prevention program.
    2. describing the role of regulations and standards in the development of fire prevention programs.
  5. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the functions and management of support services by:
    1. discussing information management systems and processes.
    2. discussing the management of communication systems and emergency response centers.
    3. researching the need for and process of inter-governmental coordination.
