Course Description
This course seeks to provide the knowledge, skills and tools for students to successfully plan, design and manage a new business venture. It is intended for those students considering self-employment for the first time or for those who are already committed as entrepreneurs. The processes of launching an entrepreneurial venture and learning the skills and techniques necessary for effective management, growth and exit strategy will be covered in the course. Students will analyze the decision making models and strategies and apply them in the management of business ventures.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will summarize legal issues relating to the new venture formation by:
- describing legal and ethical issues associated with starting a new venture.
- identifying the legal form of the new venture.
- identifying the requirements for contracts in the new venture, as well as essential components.
- The student will propose techniques for protecting business reputation, assets, and ideas of the enterprise by:
- describing legal and ethical issues associated with the internet and the business venture.
- describing the benefits and drawbacks associated with franchising as a form of business ownership.
- computing the value of intellectual property and the cost of protecting of ideas to insure success of the business venture.
- The student will select strategies required to successfully market the venture by:
- analyzing the process of customer need assessment.
- comparing how successful entrepreneurs gain market acceptance.
- determining strategies for pricing and for managing supply and demand.
- The student will evaluate market assessments by:
- defining the target market.
- explaining the process of marketing strategy development and execution.
- researching and analyzing target market data.
- The student will demonstrate the skills necessary to attain competitive advantage in the marketplace and industry by:
- describing the role of competitive advantage and techniques for attainment and preservation.
- explaining the strategy development and execution in quest of competitive advantage development.
- selecting cost effective marketing techniques for maintaining and growing the target customer base.
- The student will synthesize growth strategies by:
- researching industry data to determine growth opportunities.
- assessing the impact of growth on the venture.
- outlining a growth management plan.
- The student will summarize the techniques and advantages of leadership and development of business partnerships and alliances by:
- discussing the role of human capital in the business venture.
- explaining the functions of building trust and demonstrating effective leadership skills in creating a stable business team and enterprise.
- describing the role of forming alliances and partnerships as a strategic measure toward business success.
- The student will analyze the purpose and tactical deployment of exit strategies for the business enterprise by:
- comparing appropriate exit strategies in contingency planning for the venture.
- identifying the steps involved for taking a company public.
- explaining the process of valuing a business and the role of negotiation in the sale of an enterprise.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
