Program Summary

The Interdisciplinary Studies, Preschool Education and Training and Development subplans are offered Fully Online.  The Educational Interpreting (SLIP) subplan requires several in-person/blended courses. Our Bachelor of Science in Educational Studies and Community Leadership is an interdisciplinary program. Students seeking jobs in non-school settings benefit from portions of the essential knowledge and skills associated with the field of education. The Educational Studies and Community Leadership major has been specifically designed for students who want to deepen their understanding of the learning and teaching process, yet seek careers in non-school settings.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will compare the similarities and differences in the educational systems in various nations in terms of socio-political, economic, cultural, ideological, historical and other contexts by describing the structure, governance and administration of the educational systems in the United States of America and other countries throughout the globe.   2. Students will evaluate contemporary issues that impact youth and/or community education by analyzing the influence of various laws, policies, theories, historical events, and systemic structures on youth and community education programs. EDF 3660
  3. Students will explain the laws, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures related to health, safety, nutrition, and ethics in youth and community programs. EDF 4650
  4. Students will practice continuous professional improvement by designing professional goals consistent with private, public, and community-based organizations and engaging in targeted professional growth opportunities and reflective practices. EDF 3152
  5. Students will summarize the field of education and explain the basic functions of education: socialization, transmission of culture, social control and personal development; selection, training, and placement, teaching discipline, socialization, learning communication skills, problem solving, and decision making. Bachelor’s Degree Admission Guides outline criteria specific to each program including course requirements, GPA and the application process.

Graduation Requirements

A cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher is required for graduation. Important notice to current Baccalaureate students: To view a list of the classes you need to take before you can graduate, login to MySPC and choose My Learning Plan. Contact your academic advisor with any questions. *NOTE: FLDOE removed State Mandated Prerequisite course EDF 1005, May 2018.

GENERAL EDUCATION: All students must complete the 36 credit general education requirement in order to graduate from this program. A.S. degree holders may need to complete an additional 15-21 general education credits to complete the thirty-six (36) credit hour general education requirement.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE: If you have not completed two consecutive years of the same foreign language in high school or 8 credits in college, you will need to complete 8 credits of foreign language before completing the B.S. program.

CIVIC LITERACY: As per Florida Rule 6A-10.04213, baccalaureate degree students entering a Florida College System (FCS) or State University System (SUS) institution in the 2021-2022 academic school year and thereafter must demonstrate competency through successful completion of a civic literacy course AND by achieving a passing score on the Florida Civic Literacy Examination (FCLE).
