Course Description

In this course, students will learn about the creative ideas and accomplishments of various cultures in various fields of humanities that may include art, architecture, drama, history, music, literature, philosophy, and religion.  The course will include cultural expressions from the western canon and may also include expressions from around the globe. State Core Course Description (State Rule 6A-14.0303). Students will describe, analyze, and interpret primary source examples from the visual, performing, literary, and film arts, and students will learn how an artwork’s meaning is influenced by its broader context. Topics will include examples from authors, artists, and other creators from a variety of cultures. This course satisfies SPC Humanities General Education Core and Enhanced World View requirements. (Note: Credit is only given for HUM 1020 or HUM 1020H.)

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. *Students will demonstrate knowledge of arts and ideas and synthesize information from various sources.
    1. using discipline specific vocabulary to describe works of art.
    2. distinguishing the similarities and differences among the performing, visual, and literary arts.
    3. comparing and contrasting mediums and techniques from different disciplines.
    4. explaining the relationship between “form” and “content.”
    5. comparing formal and contextual criticism.
    6. compiling and examining secondary source material.
  2. *Students will analyze and interpret selected expressions of arts and ideas.
    1. identifying the formal qualities of artworks.
    2. investigating the expressive content of artworks.
  3. *Students will compare and contrast selected expressions of arts and ideas.
    1. identifying similarities and differences in the form, content, and context among a selection of artworks.
    2. explaining how the purpose of the arts changes over time and between different cultures.
  4. *Students will identify contextual influences on the development of interdisciplinary arts and ideas.
    1. researching the social, historical, political, and technological contexts of artworks.
    2. communicating how an artwork’s social, historical, political, and technological contexts informs its meaning and purpose.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors. The writing will meet the criteria of at least Level 3 in the SPC Analytical Rubric for Writing.
