Requisites

(Admission to Educator Preparation Institute (EPI) with Reading Endorsement (Certificate with Financial Aid Eligibility) (EPIR-CT) or
Admission to Educator Preparation Institute (EPI) (Certificate with Financial Aid Eligibility) (EPI-CT)) and
Prerequisite EDF 4944 with a minimum grade of C and
Pre- or Co-requisite EDF 4949 with a minimum grade of C

Course Description

This is a course for Educator Preparation Institute (EPI) students (teacher candidates) in their final semester. Teacher candidates will complete this course in conjunction with the internship course (EDF 4949) and will be required to demonstrate competency in two of the six Florida Educator Accomplished Practices (FEAPs). This course will focus on the following areas: professional development, ethical conduct, and subject area knowledge.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. Teacher candidates will demonstrate content area literacy by:
    1. identifying essential skills in a specific content area.
    2. selecting aligned literacy strategies that support student skill development.
    3. examining student data to assess the impact of the literacy strategy on student success.
  2. Teacher candidates will manage effective assessment strategies in their assigned P-12 setting by:
    1. distinguishing between between formative, summative, and performance-based assessments.
    2. creating assessments aligned with state standards for their assigned P-12 setting.
    3. evaluating student learning outcomes using assessment data.
    4. proposing future instructional decisions based on analysis of assessment data.
  3. Teacher candidates will evaluate critical thinking and active engagement in their P-12 setting by:
    1. reviewing the concept of metacognition from theory to practice.
    2. identifying student learning needs in the planning, monitoring, and evaluation stages of the learning process.
    3. selecting strategies to support students in developing their own learning processes.
    4. utilizing critical thinking and active learning strategies in their internship placement.
    5. assessing the impact of critical thinking and active engagement strategies on student learning.
  4. Teacher candidates will explore career opportunities in the public school system by:
    1. identifying the skills and competencies required for career pathways in the public school system.
    2. researching professional networking opportunities through professional organizations and social media platforms.
    3. analyzing job search documents and sample interview questions.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
