Course Description
In this course, students will develop problem solving skills, critical thinking, computational proficiency, and contextual fluency through the study of equations, functions, and their graphs. Emphasis will be placed on quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic functions. Topics will include solving equations and inequalities, definition and properties of a function, domain and range, transformations of graphs, operations on functions, composite and inverse functions, basic polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, and applications. State Core Course Description (State Rule 6A-14.0303). This course satisfies the Mathematics General Education Core. (Note: Credit is only given for MAC 1105 or MAC 1106.)
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- *Students will solve an equation or an inequality using an appropriate technique by:
- applying rules of radicals with algebraic methods to calculate solutions to radical equations.
- applying the definition of absolute value with algebraic methods to calculate solutions to absolute value equations.
- calculating solutions to quadratic equations, including those with complex number solutions and expressing them in standard form.
- applying factoring methods to determine solutions to higher order polynomial equations.
- calculating solutions to polynomial and rational inequalities.
- calculating solutions to exponential and logarithmic equations.
- applying algebraic methods to determine solutions to systems of linear and quadratic equations in two variables.
- *Students will define and describe functions, their properties, and graphs by:
- determining whether relations, equations, and graphs are functions.
- evaluating a function using function notation.
- determining the domain and/or range of given functions (polynomial, rational, absolute value, radical, exponential and logarithmic).
- *Students will manipulate functions to simplify expressions and find new functions by:
- performing arithmetic operations on given functions.
- performing the composition of given functions.
- evaluating and simplifying the difference quotient of given linear and quadratic functions.
- determining the inverse of given functions.
- *Students will use transformations to write an equation for a function and to graph a function by:
- applying given information to determine graphs of standard linear, quadratic, cubic, rational, absolute value, radical, exponential, and logarithmic functions.
- applying transformations of the standard graphs to linear, quadratic, cubic, rational, absolute value, radical, exponential, and logarithmic functions.
- determining, given prescribed information, graphs of functions which include linear (intercepts and y-intercept form), quadratic (vertex), and rational (asymptotic behavior), and piece-wise defined.
- determining graphs of systems of linear and quadratic inequalities.
- *Students will model and solve real world problems using functions by:
- using linear equations and inequalities to calculate solutions to application problems
- using quadratic equations to calculate solutions to application problems
- applying exponential equations (exponential growth and decay) to find solutions to application problems.
- using systems of linear equations and inequalities to calculate solutions to application problems.
Criteria Performance Standard
In order to earn a grade of C or better, the student will achieve at the 70% level or higher on classroom evaluation measures. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom evaluation measures developed by individual course instructors.
