Course Description
As a culminating experience to their Educational Studies program, students will complete an Internship in a community-based organization. Educational Studies is a workforce development program that prepares students to work as leaders in youth and community development, non-profits, and other educational and business settings. The internship will provide students with field experience in the workforce. 240 contact hours.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will critically and creatively evaluate contemporary issues identified within Educational Studies curriculum that impact people and processes by:
- analyzing socioeconomic trends as well social, ethical, political and legal issues facing educational and/or community settings today.
- identifying the historical implications of current policies on educational organizations or community settings.
- identifying the underlying values of different educational organizations or community settings.
- defining the influence and origins of underlying values on organizations.
- comparing and contrasting the underlying values and multicultural perspectives of various educational institutions or community settings.
- The student will integrate knowledge and skills developed during the Educational Studies program by:
- designing a prospectus that includes a definition of an educational issue or problem to be solved as part of a capstone project
- researching the issue using academic and professional publications, the Internet, subject matter experts, etc.
- determining a specific approach to take in addressing the problem or issue.
- developing strategies for analyzing and addressing the issue or problem.
- creating an original plan that incorporates educational concepts in the overall design.
- The student will develop an independent study such as a research project, case study, grant application, improvement plan, service learning project, etc. to explore a specific issue or problem within their education or community setting by:
- creating a statement of the problem and project rationale drawn from foundational concepts acquired in the Educational Studies curriculum.
- engaging in the data collection process.
- analyzing and summarizing his/her findings and identifying future implications to the organization or community setting.
- The student will exhibit effective communication skills by:
- creating a culminating written project that includes the problem/issue under study, related literature, methodology employed, and findings.
- presenting the student’s final capstone project to faculty and/or organization/community personnel
- The student will practice continuous professional improvement by:
- applying professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions in settings serving children and youth.
- designing professional goals consistent with private, public, and community-based organizations.
- collaborating with the home, school, and larger communities to foster communication and support learning
- engaging in targeted professional growth opportunities and reflective practices.
- integrating professional ethics with shared professional values and organizational practices and policies.
