Course Description

In this course, students will develop an appreciation of and the ability to think critically about culture and be provided with the tools to understand, analyze, and discuss works of visual art and material culture. State Core Course Description (State Rule 6A-14.0303). This course partially satisfies the writing requirements outlined in the General Education Requirements. This course satisfies the Humanities General Education Core and SPC Enhanced World View requirements. Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. *Students will identify and describe terms, concepts, and methods used in the discipline of art history.
  2. *Students will apply terms, concepts, and methods used in the discipline of art history to works of visual art and material culture.
  3. *Students will identify and describe works of visual art and material culture in the works’ cultural context, including works from or inspired by the western canon and other cultural traditions.
  4. *Students will analyze works of visual art and material culture in the works’ cultural context, including works from or inspired by the western canon and other cultural traditions.
  5. *Students will generate an analytical response to works of visual art and material culture in the works’ cultural context.
  6. Students will analyze works of visual art and material culture in the works’ cultural context, including works from or inspired by the non-western canon and other cultural traditions.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors. MEASUREMENTS FOR ARH 1000 - UNDERSTANDING ART 1. The student will write at least three (3) examinations for a minimum grade of 70% on the following: A. The two dimensional elements. B. The three dimensional elements. C. The principals of design. D. The various media of the visual arts. E. The naturalistic mode. F. The expressive mode. G. The conceptual mode. H. The process of perception. I. Form and content. J. The content of specific works of art. 2. The grading scale is A = 90-100 B = 80-89 C = 70-79 D = 60-69 F = 0-59
