Course Description
This course offers an in-depth exploration of teaching English to speakers of other languages (ESOL) for education majors, focusing on bridging theory with practical application. Emphasis will be placed on the areas of Methods of Teaching ESOL (MT), ESOL Curriculum and Materials Development (CM), and Testing and Evaluation of ESOL (TE). All five ESOL Strands are comprehensively covered throughout this course. Students will complete 20 hours of field experience.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The teacher candidate will apply methods designed to enable English Language Learners to achieve progress in both content knowledge and language skills by:
- tutoring ELLs individually or in small groups to meet individual needs.
- researching ELL demographics to collaborate with families, schools, and the community, promoting family engagement and parental involvement in ELL students’ education.
- The student will integrate theoretical and practical knowledge of language structure, use, and development by:
- suggesting teaching approaches for ELL’s at various levels that support the language domains.
- modeling proficient oral and written communication skills for ELLs during assessments, and individualized and small group instruction.
- developing lessons based on language differences.
- The teacher candidate will implement evidence-based practices in ESOL by:
- researching the process of identifying, monitoring, and assessing an ELL in the classroom.
- applying appropriate teaching and learning strategies for ELLs using principles of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) to support ELLs’ language acquisition in small groups.
- incorporating listening, speaking, reading and writing strategies into instruction for ELLs.
- designing lessons for content and language using Florida’s English Language Development (ELD) Standards.
- developing a multidisciplinary unit plan that incorporates listening, speaking, reading and writing.
- developing a multidisciplinary unit plan aligned to Florida standards and benchmarks.
- planning instruction using the Florida’s English Language Development (ELD) Standards.
- The teacher candidate will design and model or teach lessons that support English acquisition for ELLs at multiple proficiency levels by:
- modeling strategies in oral communication, reading, vocabulary, writing, and grammar.
- developing a multidisciplinary unit plan.
- constructing appropriate activities to support language and literacy development in English.
- tutoring ELLs individually and in small groups.
- The student will design appropriate instruction for ELLs and those students with limited formal schooling by:
- developing or adapting formal and informal assessments with appropriate accommodations to accurately assess ELLs on a variety of topics.
- determining an ELL’s English language proficiency level.
- differentiating indicators of learning disabilities and limited English proficiency.
- The teacher candidate will utilize emerging technology and standards-based resources to support ELLs at different English proficiency levels by:
- incorporating technology into the multidisciplinary unit plan.
- adapting materials and activities to support ELLs at differing levels of proficiency.
- identifying a variety of materials that align to Florida standards to support language acquisition and content knowledge.
- The teacher candidate will use a variety of assessment instruments, procedures, and data to assess ELL’s language development and content knowledge by (TE).
- developing or adapting formal and informal assessments with appropriate accommodations to accurately assess ELLs on a variety of topics.
- identifying appropriate accommodations for instruction and assessment of ELLs.
- interpreting data based on oral, written, and reading samples of an ELL.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
