Course Description

This course addresses curriculum alignment, assessment of learning gains, and technologies available to teach students with exceptionalities. Course topics also include community, advocacy and professional organizations to support the needs of students with varying exceptionalities..

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will analyze the effects of state and federal legislation on current instructional practice by:
    1. identifying state and federal legislation
    2. comparing and contrasting major federal and state education law
    3. applying standards set forth by state and federal guidelines as to the process and procedures for educating students with exceptionalities
  2. The student will examine multi-tiered systems of support used in schools and classroom by:
    1. identifying Multi-tiered Systems of Support/Response to Intervention (MTSS/RtI) models utilized in schools
    2. explaining how multi-tiered systems of support are used to identify, monitor and support students with and without exceptionalities
  3. The student will compare the characteristics and needs of exceptional students by:
    1. identifying different disability categories detailed under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
    2. describing characteristics and needs associated with the different disability categories
  4. The student will evaluate evidence-based strategies designed to support exceptional students in the classroom, at home, and in the community by:
    1. exploring evidence-based strategies and accommodations to support the academic, and behavior needs of students with exceptionalities.
    2. applying the concepts of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and differentiated instruction to instructional planning and delivery for students with exceptionalities.
    3. analyzing the impact of evidence-based practices on the development of students with exceptionalities.
    4. summarizing characteristics of effective collaboration and how collaboration supports the well-being and success of students with exceptionalities.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
