Admission to Secondary English Education with Reading and ESOL Endorsement (Bachelor of Science) (ENGEDR-BS)

Course Description

This course covers basic skills and knowledge for creating a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction and effective communication among members of the learning community. The course emphasizes attitudes, language patterns, values, and behaviors for eliciting and maintaining student learning as well as on-task behaviors. (Note: This course also includes methods and strategies for consulting with other school professionals and parents and includes 15 school-based hours.)

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will explain methods for managing individual and class behaviors by:
    1. establishing clear rules and procedures.
    2. developing a comprehensive classroom management plan.
    3. describing the characteristics of effective teachers.
  2. The student will explain how to maintain a climate of fairness and support by:
    1. displaying respect and high expectations for all students.
    2. acknowledging positive individual/class behaviors.
    3. developing strategies to establish a positive work environment in the classroom.
  3. The student will demonstrate effective transitional strategies throughout and between lessons by:
    1. designing a safe and accessible environment.
    2. listing effective attention signals and transitional strategies.
  4. The student will explain the use of verbal and nonverbal behavior that shows interest in and respect for students by:
    1. providing encouragement and positive feedback to students.
    2. identifying general guidelines for effective teacher language.
    3. using verbal and nonverbal behaviors that show non-contingent interest in students.
    4. using verbal and nonverbal behavior that respects all students.
  5. The student will generate an instructional focus in the classroom by:
    1. developing instructional strategies that use time productively
    2. circulating around the room when appropriate.
    3. documenting when students are not engaged and redirecting them.
  6. The student will model clear, acceptable oral and written communication skills by:
    1. providing oral exchanges of information and ideas that students easily understand.
    2. giving students directions they are able to follow.
    3. displaying organized and fluent writing.
    4. speaking with correct grammar and acceptable word choice.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
