Course Description

This course is the final component of the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Endorsement for Elementary Education, Exceptional Student Education, Secondary English Education, and Prekindergarten-Primary Education majors. In this course, teacher candidates will explore how their teaching practices address the needs of English Learners (ELs) by considering the Florida ESOL strands; Communication and Understanding for English Language Learners (ELLs) (CU), Applied Linguistics (AL), Methods of Teaching ESOL (MT) , ESOL Curriculum and Materials Development (CM) , and Testing and Evaluation of ESOL (TE) by completing a field-based project and instructional reflection.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The teacher candidate will demonstrate strategies that support ELLs’ learning of academic content and language for measurable academic progress (CU.1) by:
    1. delivering instruction tailored to individual student needs.
    2. modeling expected language and conduct for the classroom.
  2. The teacher candidate will demonstrate understanding that language is a system to support ELLs’ acquisition of English at varying proficiency levels (AL.1) by:
    1. incorporating the components of the English language, i.e., phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics throughout instruction.
    2. planning individualized instruction that promotes language acquisition listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
    3. modeling proficient oral and written communication skills for ELLs based on the situation, audience, and purpose during whole class and small group instruction.
    4. administering proficiency assessments to identify similarities and differences between English and student’s language to guide instruction.
  3. The teacher candidate will apply knowledge of evidence-based practices and requirements in the field of ESOL (MT.1) by:
    1. researching the process followed for an ELL regarding identification, assessment, and progress monitoring in their classroom.
    2. researching an ELL’s background (i.e., first language, prior education, etc.).
  4. The teacher candidate will apply evidence-based practices to deliver instruction that supports and accelerates English language acquisition (MT.2) by:.
    1. planning instruction that meets the needs of an ELL in the classroom based on proficiency assessments.
    2. developing lessons to support the ELL in specific areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
  5. The teacher candidate will ensure ELLs have access to benchmarks-aligned academic content to provide language support at varying English proficiency levels (MT.3) by:
    1. supporting language acquisition for listening, speaking, reading and writing through evidence-based approaches.
    2. using Florida’s English Language Development (ELD) Standards to plan lessons that combine academic content with language objectives.
  6. The teacher candidate will plan and deliver lessons that include English language acquisition and meet the needs of ELLs at varying English proficiency levels (CM.1) by:
    1. creating a student-centered learning environment in the classroom.
    2. considering an EL’s prior education when planning instruction.
  7. The teacher candidate will use technological tools and benchmarks-aligned resources to effectively meet the needs of ELLs at varying English proficiency levels (CM.2)
    1. using a variety of resources and technology to deliver instruction aligned to benchmarks.
  8. The teacher candidate will use assessment data to identify the appropriate instructional approach, select appropriate scaffolds, guide differentiation of instruction, and use corrective feedback (TE.1)
    1. using proficiency assessment data to plan instruction.
    2. progress monitoring the EL’s progress through pre- and post-assessments.
    3. using data to determine any other learning needs.
  9. The teacher candidate will use a variety of assessment tools to monitor student progress, achievement, and learning gains (TE.2)
    1. assessing students on content through classroom tools.
    2. using both formative and summative assessments to support ELLs’ language in the content areas.
