Requisites

(Admission to Elementary Education (K-6) with Infused ESOL & Reading Endorsements (Bachelor of Science) (ELEDR-BS) and
Pre- or Co-requisite EDE 4940 with a minimum grade of C) or
(Admission to Exceptional Student Education (K-12) with Infused ESOL & Reading Endorsements (Bachelor of Science) (ESEDR-BS) and
Pre- or Co-requisite EEX 4940 with a minimum grade of C) or
(Admission to Prekindergarten/Primary Education (age 3 through grade 3) with Infused ESOL and Reading Endorsements (Bachelor of Science) (PKPED-BS) and
Pre- or Co-requisite EEC 4946 with a minimum grade of C)

Course Description

This course is a culminating practicum to complete the Florida Reading Endorsement. Topics covered in the course include the following: assessing and teaching oral/aural language development, phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. Through systematic data analysis, preservice teachers implement a comprehensive, research-based plan of instruction for their students using a problem-solving approach. Pre-service teachers will work directly with public school K-12 teachers and students in large group, small group, and individual settings to connect literacy theory to classroom practice. (Note: Students will spend a minimum of 5 hours per week for 15 weeks.)

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The preservice teacher will model evidence-based instructional practices for facilitating literacy development for all areas of reading by:
    1. applying research-based interventions to address student needs including English Learners, students experiencing reading difficulties, and students with dyslexia
    2. differentiating instruction by using multi-sensory strategies and interventions using complex texts
    3. using a variety of strategies to increase students’ background knowledge and to provide purposeful, relevant, and engaging instruction
    4. creating an information intensive environment, including print and digital texts
    5. implementing strategies to develop students’ higher order thinking and critical reading skills
    6. incorporating intentional explicit, systematic, and sequential writing instruction to improve decoding skills
  2. The preservice teacher will evaluate student progress over time by:
    1. collecting informal and formal data on students’ literacy proficiency levels
    2. administering informal and/or formal literacy assessments to determine students’ current literacy levels and learning gains
    3. communicating with caregivers and families the meaning of reading assessment data and how they could support their children at home
    4. analyzing data collected from literacy assessments to evaluate student learning and to inform future instruction

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
