Course Description
This course is the study of child growth and development from conception to age eight. The focus is on the development of the young child. Course content will include theories of child development; the means by which young children learn; the role of adults in children's development; and issues of health, safety and nutrition.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will evaluate the major theoretical perspectives of early childhood development by:
- comparing the work of major theorists.
- summarizing perspectives of child development.
- explaining practical applications of developmental theories.
- The student will analyze all developmental domains from conception through age eight by:
- explaining the development of children from conception through age eight.
- comparing language and literacy development from conception through age eight.
- distinguishing developmental delays and atypical development from conception through age eight.
- The student will evaluate the adult’s influence on a child’s learning, including family and other factors by:
- describing how adults influence children’s learning.
- exploring how developmentally appropriate experiences influence child growth and development.
- analyzing environmental impact on children's ability to learn.
- The student will compare the interrelationships of health, safety, and nutrition issues as they relate to child growth and development by:
- summarizing how health, safety, and nutritional issues relate to child growth and development.
- interpreting health, safety, and nutritional needs.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
