Course Description
This course is designed to address principles of learning and student development and their applications to learning/teaching situations. Topics include self-concept, motivation, views of intelligence, and assessment. Students will analyze teaching and learning scenarios in order to develop a repertoire of teaching approaches. This course emphasizes the interaction between the role of the teacher and the needs of students at various developmental ages and stages.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will evaluate developmental theories by:
- connecting the major contributors to the different developmental theories.
- explaining the characteristics of the different areas of development.
- analyzing the effect of student development on learning, given specific teaching/learning situations.
- distinguishing between cognitive and affective domains using Bloom's Taxonomy 2.0.
- The student will assess the principles and contributions of major learning theories by:
- contrasting empiricism and rationalism.
- connecting contributors to behaviorism, Gestalt psychology, psychodynamics and developmental psychology.
- applying principles of each of the major learning theories.
- distinguishing between classical conditioning and operant conditioning.
- analyzing the use and effectiveness of learning theory given a specific classroom situation.
- The student will compare the debates related to self-concept, motivation, views of intelligence, and assessment by:
- stating examples of self-concept, self-esteem and self-efficacy.
- discussing the differences between extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation.
- reviewing the relationship of different learning theories to motivation.
- explaining the origin and limitations of intelligence tests.
- examining issues related to multiple intelligence and the impact on teaching/learning situations.
- analyzing issues related to assessment of learning.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
