Course Description
This is a foundation course developing knowledge and perception of three-dimensional form and its elements. An expansion of design skills, processes and concepts of design necessary for all art careers is discussed.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will analyze the elements and principles of design in various three-dimensional design projects by:
- distinguishing the visual elements as they apply to three-dimensional design.
- selecting a variety of construction techniques for creating three-dimensional structures.
- The student will create three-dimensional space-time systems by:
- constructing three-dimensional forms with sound structural systems.
- constructing three-dimensional sculptural objects using a variety of materials appropriate to the intended design task.
- The student will evaluate the design process in a variety of contexts by:
- justifying that design is relative to social context.
- supporting the design process through problem solving.
- The student will analyze three-dimensional design projects by:
- utilizing the vocabulary of the elements and principles of design in order to participate in oral critiques on three-dimensional projects.
- evaluating the quality of a three-dimensional design project during oral critiques.
- The student will discuss Modern to Contemporary art practices related to visual production in their design projects through assessments and writings about selected topics by:
- explaining selected readings, writings, and discussions.
- interpreting the visual language vocabulary of their own artwork and the artwork of their peers.
- The student will use stationary tools, handheld power tools, and digital fabrication tools by:
- applying knowledge gained in the creation of their 3-D artworks to meet the criteria of the assigned projects.
- illustrating how these tools can be used in a safe but creative manner in the creation of their artwork.
- The student will demonstrate mold making by:
- designing and 3-D printing an object suitable for a one-part mold and a second object for a two-part mold.
- creating an object suitable for molding, creating both one-part and two-part molds, and casting parts from them.
Criteria Performance Standard
The student will submit assigned projects which demonstrate his or her ability to: 1. solve the visual problem posed in the assignment. 2.utilize a wide range of materials and techniques appropriate to the assignment and demonstrate technical proficiency in the use of these media. 3. creatively find a visual solution to the design problem. The instructor will evaluate mastery of the course objectives through assessment of each student's portfolio and outside assignments, using a minimum achievement of 70 percent.
