Course Description

This course examines the basic fundamentals of management in relation to issues within organizations and operations of business enterprises. Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will describe the concepts of “Management” by identifying the issues managers face that apply to various types of organizations by:
    1. defining the major management competencies.
    2. listing the major contemporary management tools.
    3. identifying the major contributors to the history of management thought.
    4. discussing the major roles that managers perform in all organizations.
    5. stating the differences between efficiency and effectiveness.
  2. The student will describe the environment of management by:
    1. identifying the economic, social, legal and technological environments of business.
    2. stating the factors that shape a manager’s ethical decision making process.
    3. defining corporate social responsibility.
    4. recognizing how ethical organizations are created.
  3. The student will describe the four functions of management: planning, organizing, leading and controlling by:
    1. defining technical, human, and conceptual skills and their relevance for managers and leaders.
    2. identifying the current management experts and describing their contribution to leadership, strategic planning, and operations management.
    3. comparing and contrasting the major differences between management and leadership.
    4. discussing the benefits of planning.
    5. stating the steps used in managerial decision-making.
  4. The student will identify the basics of “organizational development” and the managing of organizational change by:
    1. defining organizational change.
    2. recognizing reasons why people resist change in organizations.
    3. describing innovation strategies available to managers.
    4. stating the role of human resource management.
    5. classifying the tools managers use to recruit, select and appraise their workforce.
  5. The student will summarize strategic planning by:
    1. stating the decision-making models available to managers.
    2. recognizing the major tools available to a manager for evaluating an organization’s performance.
    3. explaining the strategic management process.
    4. defining the major levels of strategy.
  6. The student will differentiate between leadership concepts and styles by:
    1. stating the major differences between managers and leaders.
    2. describing the impact leadership styles have on the development of his/her personal philosophy of management
    3. recognizing personal characteristics associated with effective leaders.
    4. identifying the major leadership trends emerging in today’s organizations.
    5. classifying the major theories of motivation.
    6. discussing the roles of teams in an organization.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy,demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
