This course introduces the student to the basic working concepts of the art of editing through the use of a non-linear video editing system. Topics to be covered include: capturing both digital and analog video, organizing a new project, storing video clips, explaining the browser, viewer, canvas and timeline. Students will experience hands on instruction in the use of the above elements, which will result in the ability to log and capture, edit with straight cuts and simple effects, and output the final product to tape. Students will also be exposed to some of the more advanced features of an editing program including special effects, composing, text and titling.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
The student will demonstrate a clear understanding of the basic concepts and terminology related to non-linear editing by:
explaining the nature of non-linear, computer-based editing vs. tape to tape analog editing.
explaining the terminology as it relates to editing.
identifying the difference between PAL and NTSC.
explaining system requirements and configurations.
The student will explore and identify the editing interface and use available tools by:
explaining the locations and variations of editing and effects windows.
explaining the locations and use of input and output windows.
discussing media management tools.
discovering and explaining the use of each tool contained in the tool palette.
explaining the use of motion and effects tabs.
understanding the location, use and anatomy of the log and capture windows.
The student will understand the process of planning and developing an edited video presentation by:
applying the process of project planning.
opening and saving a new project.
logging and capturing media.
explaining the use and anatomy of the timeline.
identifying and explaining the use of the editing tools.
applying the process of editing a sequence.
The student will demonstrate the proper use of the non-linear editing program, including video log and capture, media storage and timeline editing by:
logging and capturing both digital and analog video.
understanding the process of determining where and how to store media.
editing project sequences in the timeline.
The student will work with and demonstrate a clear understanding of the concepts and use of digital sound by:
using audio filters.
explaining different ways to alter audio levels and quality.
manipulating multiple channels of audio in the timeline.
importing and exporting digital audio.
The student will explore the process and understand the concept of media management by:
moving all or part of a project to another disk.
removing unused media from a project.
removing completed project files and media from a scratch disk.
explaining the process and reason to format a scratch disk.
explaining the process and possibilities for external long term storage.
The student will investigate the process of setting program and project preferences, scratch disks and audio/video settings by:
explaining the location and anatomy of the preferences window.
demonstrating the ability to modify preferences for device control, capture, sequence presets and scratch disks.
explaining what a scratch disk is and how to set them.
modifying and choosing general preference settings, including levels of undo, automatic save and still image duration.
choosing options for viewing external video, capturing via firewire and setting audio input and quality options.
The student will explore the use of text, titles and special video effects by:
explaining the location of the text and title tabs.
explaining the location of the effects, filter and motion tabs.
demonstrating the ability to select and modify font size and style.
demonstrating the ability to use drop shadows
explaining the use of the filter effects.
explaining the use of motion effects.
explaining and demonstrating the use of video transitions, including dissolves, wipes and 3D DVE moves.
The student will demonstrate a clear understanding of outputting a finished project to external media by:
correctly selecting export options.
explaining the location and anatomy of the print to video window.
modifying print to video options.
using firewire to print to video.
using firewire to record directly from the timeline.
explaining different formats available for recording a video project.
The student will investigate the use and function of internal and external storage devices by:
explaining the variety of external storage devices including, firewire hard drives, DVD, DV tape and CDROM.
exploring the difference between an internal and an external storage device.
demonstrating an understanding of video compression, frame size and the amount of room uncompressed video takes to store in each format.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
