Course Description
This course explores advanced bitmapped image processing techniques. Students will learn how to prepare images for various output venues, including print, Web and multimedia publishing. Projects focus on resolution, color management, image and texture creation, and special effects. Software used by professional media developers to create images for digital media applications will be used in this class.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
  1. The student will demonstrate advanced techniques in digital imagery manipulation to produce images of industry design standards by:
    1. investigating the uses and capabilities of advanced image development/enhancing software.
    2. rendering various images through either downloading or scanning them into computer software applications for alteration, enhancement and refinement.
    3. exploring various image building techniques specific to the effects desired, by using the appropriate image manipulation software.
  2. The student will demonstrate an understanding of terminology as it specifically relates to advanced computer rendered images by:
    1. discussing the terms and program commands specific to each computer application.
    2. selecting and manipulating the appropriate tools and commands to effectively develop or enhance advanced digital images.
    3. exploring how to use the various tools, specific to computer software applications to create or enhance advanced digital images.
  3. The student will demonstrate how to manage completed images used in digital media software applications by:
    1. utilizing techniques specific to image editing software.
    2. exploring resolution, modes and actions.
    3. identifying specific techniques used with image manipulation.
  4. The student will design and incorporate advanced typographic elements within digital images by:
    1. identifying advanced typographic techniques possible within specific digital image software application.
    2. demonstrating appropriate typographic procedures to enhance the communication or the message of the design.
    3. exploring how, through the use of various tools within the specific computer software application, to create or and blend images and typography.
  5. The student will organize, store and manage digital image documents and files for print, Web and screen presentation output by:
    1. demonstrating the specific resolutions, modes, file sizes, and formats required by digital image applications.
    2. saving computer compatible formats.
    3. preparing files for successful import.
Criteria Performance Standard
Projects will be assigned throughout the semester to allow students to demonstrate their mastery of graphic concepts and software programs. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
