Course Description
This course is designed to introduce tools for music and sound exploration in the areas of web, video, animation, and video games. Students will develop knowledge of basic digital audio concepts, audio processing principles, automated control of audio parameters concepts, plus digital audio production as relates specifically to the field of multimedia. All areas of course content will be applied to practical applications through project-oriented assignments.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
  1. The student will explain basic acoustic principles and music synthesis by:
    1. describing the perceptual dimensions of sound.
    2. defining waveforms, frequency and amplitude.
    3. listing elements of digital synthesis and sampling.
  2. The student will illustrate digital audio principles by:
    1. choosing formats and compression for storing digital audio.
    2. describing software and procedures for audio file conversion.
    3. creating, editing, and compressing sound files on a computer.
    4. importing audio into audio editing software.
  3. The student will perform multi-channel audio production by:
    1. employing software for capturing, editing, and storing digital audio.
    2. mixing multiple tracks of digital audio.
    3. creating and storing multitrack mixdowns.
    4. describing effects used in digital audio editing software.
    5. employing effects processing on audio files.
    6. describing hardware for multichannel digital audio.
  4. The student will employ audio for multimedia by:
    1. explaining how to create and utilize streaming media.
    2. describing the role of audio in video games.
    3. discussing the application of music and sound effects in slide presentations.
    4. evaluating Web sites that utilize sound for maximum impact.
    5. explaining how to synchronize sound with video.
    6. composing music and sound effect tracks for video.
    7. determining optimal audio content and format for multimedia projects.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
