Course Description
This course is a foundation course in computer-aided graphics. This course addresses techniques, applications, formats and concepts necessary to build graphics to be used in digital media presentations. Software used by professional media developers to create images for digital media applications will be used in this class.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
  1. The student will use the image production process by starting with quality images and finishing with computer manipulated images by:
    1. exploring the uses and capabilities of image development/enhancing software.
    2. rendering various images and then scanning them into computer software programs which will facilitate the computer enhancement of the images.
    3. exploring various image making techniques specific to the effects desired, by using the appropriate image manipulation software.
  2. The student will scan or access existing photographs and manipulate them into finished computer generated images by:
    1. applying various illustration techniques to the photographic images.
    2. creating collages generated in the computer.
    3. exploring photographic image manipulation techniques.
  3. The student will demonstrate an understanding of terminology of digital typography as it specifically relates to computer rendered images by:
    1. identifying techniques possible within specific software programs.
    2. describing the differences between and uses of vector and bitmap images.
    3. exploring how to use the various tools, with specific computer software programs to create or manipulate images.
  4. The student will prepare finished images to be used in digital media software programs by:
    1. analyzing and understanding the specific resolutions, modes, file sizes, and formats required by digital media applications.
    2. saving computer generated images as files that can be recognized by digital media software.
    3. exploring organizing projects which contain all of the fonts, source files, nested images and linked files necessary for a successful import or placement into digital software applications.
Criteria Performance Standard
Each student will be required to keep a digital portfolio which will show the creative evolution of assigned projects. Projects will be assigned throughout the semester to allow students to demonstrate their mastery of graphic concepts and software programs. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
