Course Description
Within the laboratory environment, this course will be devoted to the study and performance of power-assisted exercise modes and cardiovascular-based and neurophysiologically-based therapeutic exercise programs. Practice in the laboratory will involve demonstration, observation, analysis and performance monitoring.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- Upon completion of this course, the student will demonstrate competence in incorporating neurophysiologic strategies with interventions as appropriate for attaining goals identified in the plan of care established by the physical therapist.
- Implement selected interventions in a competent, safe and effective manner to a simulated patient with simple conditions as identified in the plan of care established by the physical therapist. Interventions include:
- Power assisted exercise to address strength and balance impairments
- Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (P.N.F.) techniques
- Cardiovascular Rehabilitation (Aerobic capacity/endurance conditioning/reconditioning)
- Incorporate developmental activities and motor training in physical therapy interventions for a simulated patient with a complex condition to achieve goals as identified in a plan of care.
- Incorporate sensory input techniques and positioning strategies to facilitate/inhibit muscle tone/movement on a simulated patient with a complex condition to achieve goals as identified in a plan of care.
- Implement an exercise program in a competent, safe and effective manner to a simulated patient with a complex condition as identified in a plan of care established by the physical therapist. Interventions to include:
- Developmental Activities
- Motor Training
- Movement Pattern Training
- Neuromuscular Reeducation
- Instruct on a simulated patient, movement pattern training specifically Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (P.N.F.) patterns, as directed by the supervising physical therapist.
- Select techniques and positions for facilitation and inhibition of movement and muscle tone, as directed by the supervising physical therapist.
- Instruct, on a simulated patient, exercises in developmental activities training, as directed by the supervising physical therapist.
- Develop exercise programs for treatment of selected pathologies utilizing neuromuscular re-education to facilitate and inhibit movement and/or muscle tone, as directed by the supervising physical therapist based upon the plan of care.
- Upon completion of this course, the student will demonstrate competence in carrying out the plan of care for patients with cardiovascular conditions.
- Implement cardiovascular exercises, as directed by the supervising physical therapist based upon the plan of care.
- Monitor the simulated patient’s performance with therapeutic exercises and functional training and correct the patient or modify the intervention strategy to facilitate achievement of goals identified in the plan of care.
- Determine when an intervention should be stopped due to a simulated patient’s response.
- Recognize a simulated patient's abnormal and normal breathing and coughing characteristics.
- Perform techniques to increase chest wall expansion and excursion for selected pathologies on a simulated patient with a complex condition.
- Upon completion of this course, the student will demonstrate competence in implementing selected interventions as directed by the physical therapist.
- Execute the performance of power-assisted exercise modes on a power-assisted exercise apparatus, as directed by the supervising physical therapist.
- Instruct the healthcare team members and caregivers on positioning for selected pathologies discussed in PHT2220 lecture.
- Apply accurate and timely billing and documentation for an intervention performed on a simulated patient consistent with the plan of care.
- Upon completion of this course, the student will accurately record data from a simulated patient for the following:
- Gait & locomotion: 6 minute walk test, Borg perceived exertion
- Balance: Bio-dex balance, balance scale
- Upon completion of this course, the student will demonstrate competence in performing components of data collection skills essential for carrying out the plan of care by administering appropriate tests and measures for respiration.
- Recognize limitations in a simulated patient’s rib cage excursion and indicate when manual techniques need to be utilized to improve chest expansion.
- Detect signs and symptoms of respiratory distress in a simulated patient.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 78% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
